Running a beauty salon in Austria
Austria's beauty market runs on small, owner-led businesses: the neighbourhood Friseur in a Viennese district, the barbershop in Graz, the cosmetics studio in a town of a few thousand people. Loyal regulars and personal recommendations carry most salons — and a growing share of those regulars now expects to book online.
The typical Austrian salon is small and independent — a solo owner, a studio with two or three chairs, or a rented spot inside a bigger space. A personal recommendation is still the strongest marketing there is: a good reputation in the district or the village fills a calendar more reliably than any ad. Pace, prices and competition differ sharply between Vienna, Graz, Linz, Salzburg or Innsbruck and the smaller regions. Cash is still widely used, though card and contactless payments are clearly gaining ground, and tipping — usually rounding the bill up — is part of good manners. Founders starting out in Austria can get their first bearings from the WKO, the Austrian economic chamber.
In many Austrian salons, bookings still work the old way: by phone, and increasingly through Instagram DMs — barbershops and nail studios in particular run half their calendar out of their inbox. Booking marketplaces exist in Austria too, but they push the salon's own brand into the background. Meanwhile clients increasingly expect to find a salon on Google and lock in a time online right away — without calling and without waiting for a reply.
YourSalon is the booking system behind this academy. The interface comes in German plus six more languages (English, Czech, Slovak, Polish, Russian, Ukrainian), and the booking page shows up in the client's own language — noticeable in a city as international as Vienna. Pricing and billing run in euros, and there is no commission per booking. Reminders go out by email and WhatsApp, so fewer appointments quietly fall through.
